Welcome to the first of two weeks of "This Week in Doctor Who" guest
edited and written by yours truly. For those who may not remember, the
last time I did a guest stint for this column, "The Lion", the first
episode of the William Hartnell serial, The Crusade, had just been
recovered and Big Finish had just started their original audio drama
line for Doctor Who (or was about to, I can't remember anymore) way back
in 1999. Now, nearly seven years later, a lot has gone on in the
interim. We're already into the second series of a successful
television relaunch of Doctor Who and worldwide many more viewers are
watching.
And let's not forget to send a hearty congratualations to newlyweds
Benjamin and Lisa Elliott whose ceremony was held this past Saturday
during the broadcast of the second half of the two-part Cybermen story,
"The Age of Steel". This episode's overnight viewing figures show the
Saturday night broadcast was watched by an average of 6.9 million
viewers. It was first in the timeslot and second for the day behind
this year's Eurovision Song Contest. Considering that I have the tune
by Lithuania's entry into the latter event still running in my head, I'd
have to say that I'm not very surprised--now, Lordi from Finland on the
other hand...
According to http://www.radio.nl/2003/home/medianieuws/010.archief/2006/05/106818.html -- an article from Radio Netherlands, I believe -- the 2005 series (Series One) of Doctor Who starring Christopher Eccleston as the Ninth Doctor is set to begin airing on Nederland 3 on Saturday 10 June at 7PM CET. Much of the Netherlands already has access to over-the-air broadcasts of {c[1=BBC One}} and Two but it's probably assumed that Ned3 will air the series with subitles or dubbed into the Dutch language.
Hong Kong broadcaster ATV World -- http://www.hkatv.com/world/05/ --
completed its run of Series One on Sunday 14 May. It is unknown if they
will purchase Series Two.
Spain & Portugal Doctor Who fans will get to see the last 3 episodes of Series One - eventually. Digital Plus channel People + Arts finishes its repeat of the first 10 episodes on the weekend of 1 through 4 June. Starting 4 June, episodes will repeat at 1:30AM most nights beginning with Rose. Boom Town ("La alcaldesa de Cardiff" -> "The Mayoress of Cardiff") will air at 1:30AM late Sunday 18 June. Bad Wolf will air at 1:30AM late Monday 19 June. The Parting of the Ways ("La despedida" -> "The Goodbye") will air at 1:30AM late Tuesday 20 June. The series will begin repeating again on 21 June. I don't know why they skipped these last 3 episodes the first two times they aired the series.
BBC Three is currently going through a repeat of the first half of
Series Two which began two days ago on Monday 22 May. Episodes are
airing weeknights at 7PM all this week with "Age of Steel" airing as the
normal repeat broadcast on Friday night at 9PM. The Sunday night repeat
of The Idiot's Lantern will air at a slightly later time on BBC Three
at 7:10PM with the cut down Confidential repeat immediately following at
7:55PM. Generally, BBC Three's schedule is very fluid so this could
change at the last moment.
SciFi http://www.scifi.com in the US will have a mini-marathon of Doctor Who episodes on Friday June 16, the week after The Parting of the Ways airs on the channel. The marathon is from 8PM to 3AM Eastern, and consists of 4 episodes, 3 of them airing twice.
8PM & Midnight - Aliens of London
9PM & 1AM - World War Three
10PM & 2AM - Dalek
11PM only - The Long Game
Marathons of other sci-fi shows air on June 23 and 30. Doctor Who will probably not repeat on Fridays due to the start of a new season of SciFi Friday programming in July - July schedule information is not out yet. Father's Day airs on Sunday June 25 at 11PM, suggesting that SciFi may do a repeat run on Sunday nights this Summer.
As of this writing, no broadcasters outside the UK have revealed the
dates when Series Two will begin airing. It will air around the world
-- but patience is needed.
The BBC Press Office -- http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice -- and C21
Media -- http://www.c21media.net -- often announce when a Doctor Who
international sale occurs. Worth keeping an eye on, just in case.
Benjamin is away on a honeymoon with his wife this week and next, so any
comments or corrections in the interim through June 7th can be directed
to me at thisweekindoctorwho-owner@yahoogroups.com , SnoggerNo1 on AOL
